Mahi fish are some of the most sought-after game fish in the world. They have an impressive fighting spirit and can reach up to 80 pounds in weight. The fish’s beautiful colors range from silver blue to golden yellow with vibrant iridescent stripes. The mahi fish’s body is covered in diamond-shaped scales that give it a distinctive look and feel.
Mahi fish are a popular choice for sport fishing. Anglers have a variety of techniques to catch mahi fish, including trolling, jigging, and casting with lures. The fish can be caught with both artificial and live bait, and they can be found near reefs, buoys, and deep water structures.
Mahi fish is also a favorite of commercial fishermen. The fish is highly valued for its firm texture and mild flavor. The fish is often used in sashimi, sushi, and ceviche dishes. The firm texture of the fish makes it an ideal choice for grilling or baking.
Bones Outfitters features Mahi fish on two of our Performance Shirts. Our Mad Dorado and Trolling for Mahi performance shirts feature colorful and unique designs. Our performance shirts are made with UPF 50+ material to protect your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays.

Washing your shirt is pretty easy. You can wash with colors and on cold or warm water. Once again, you do not want to expose the fabric to high heat. You can use Oxyclean type cleaners to spot treat fish blood areas or soiled areas on the shirt. Since our graphics are printed INTO the material, the colors should be safe.
Drying your shirt on high temperatures will cause damage to the fabric which can cause the UPF rating to decrease. To maximize the protectiveness, only dry on low to medium heat or you can always hang it out to dry the old fashioned way. The shirt will shrink some, but this is a good thing. It causes the fabric to become closer together, improving the UPF factor.
Do's:
Do use cold or warm water.
Do use spot treatment to bloody areas of the shirt as soon as possible.
Do dry the material on low to medium heat.
Don't:
Don't wash using hot water.
Don't dry using high heat.
Don't use bleach.
Don't get near high heat areas such as boat motors or any type of open flame.

On June 26, 2018, Victoria Burgess will attempt to make history on a paddleboard.
Bones Outfitters is proud to support Victoria Burgess by keeping her cool and protected with their 55+ UV gear while she sets out on her monumental journey to become the first woman to cross the Florida Straits via SUP (Standup Paddle Board). Burgess will begin her lengthy trip in Cuba and paddle her way 100-120 miles to the Southernmost Point in Key West, Florida.
She will battle the blazing sun, relentless waves, ever changing weather and anything else that mother nature decides to throw at her, but Burgess is unwavering in her pursuit for adventure and to help raise awareness and advocate for women’s athletics and empowerment. The crossing is referred to as “Chica Libre Crossing”, meaning “free girl” in Spanish.
“I love to push myself and to take on new adventures, so I wanted a name that would represent the strength we all have to 'set ourselves free' of anything that is holding us back and to instead go out there and chase our dreams," says Burgess. "It won't be easy, but hopefully with a lot of persistence, plenty of patience and mother nature on my side I will accomplish my goal in a world record time.”
When asked about her youth and upbringing into sports and athletics Burgess said:
“Growing up I was always involved in sports... but mostly land sports. Softball was my main sport, however I was involved in pretty much everything from softball to soccer to basketball, volleyball, water polo, heck I even did karate and color guard. I didn’t get into surfing until I was about 19 and really didn’t start developing into a surfer until further down the line. The last 5-6 years is when my surfing got better, and also what led me to SUP. I started SUPing in Sept 2013 when I stood on a “race board” for the first time and only a few weeks later I entered my first 3 mile race, which I ended up winning. That is when I got hooked! As an adult it’s always difficult to find sports to be active and competitive in, but SUP helps me be active and competitive all in one. SUP also has an amazing community and provides such a great overall body workout.”
Victoria is an active woman and an inspiration to many.
What is the reason for your trip?
“Being an ocean athlete, I fell in love with ocean SUP (rather than flat water). I love downwind paddling and of course surfing, so I started to head more into the area of ocean type of races and adventures. I have completed several crossings in Hawaii from one island to another and really enjoy all the uncertainties of what is thrown at you while out there paddling in open water. As I reach my mid 30's I have done a lot of thinking and really want to use this time to push myself, physically and mentally as much as possible. So, as I was making my goal list, I thought about my home waters in Florida (rather than Hawaii), and decided I wanted to find something local, which is what led me to this channel crossing. I named this trip "chica libre sup crossing', which means 'free girl' in Spanish. The reason behind the name is that I want this paddle to signify that you can do whatever it is that you put your mind to so long as you 'free' yourself of whatever might be holding you back. There are a lot of things that would make this trip seem impossible for someone like me to do… For one, I work full time. Second, I have been studying for several degree’s in school and also I have had a LOT of obstacles this year that have made this journey even more difficult, however I have continued on with the theory... “free your mind and focus”. I want to use my experience to inspire others to do the same thing and push themselves to the max”
Competing in numerous distance races including the world-famous Molokai to Oahu race as well as Maui to Molokai, where she took home a third-place finish in the 14-foot stock division. After years of surfing and SUP in Hawaii's waters, she developed a love for navigational open ocean events and is a force to be reckoned with.
Keep an eye out or Victoria and lets all root her on during this monumental journey!
Bones Outfitters is outfitting Victoria “Chica Libre” Burgess with all 55+ UV Performance Apparel on her trip and will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the NEW “Chica Libre edition” men’s and women’s shirts to help support Burgess and her camera and safety crew along their journey from Cuba to Key West.
A landing party will take place at the southernmost point in Key West, so come out and support Victoria while she sets a new world record and proves to everyone around the world that anything is possible if you put your mind to it and don’t give up.

Research over the past 50 years has brought much attention to the need for sun protection, and for good reason. Too much radiation from the sun is the leading cause of skin cancer, and almost 9 in 10 cases of melanoma could be prevented with safe sun protection.
]]>Research over the past 50 years has brought much attention to the need for sun protection, and for good reason. Too much radiation from the sun is the leading cause of skin cancer, and almost 9 in 10 cases of melanoma could be prevented with safe sun protection.
Sunscreen has long been a powerful mechanism to keep sun-baskers protected, whether headed for a day at the beach, over the course of a long workday, or during varying forms of sport. Brands have thousands of products boasting SPF as the single best form of protection from the sun, and while lotions that contain SPF are indeed necessary for sensitive areas like the face and neck, folks often forget to re-apply as directed, risking dangerous health ramifications.
Now, there is new technology that has brought about a more complete solution for sun protection called UVP clothing – something especially beneficial for anglers who often spend hours in the sun partaking in their favorite sport.
Traditionally, guarding yourself from the sun’s powerful and damaging UV rays has presented three options: using moisturizers and creams that contain SPF, layering clothing over exposed areas, or simply limiting one’s time out in the sun. When it comes to the gear necessary to participate in what should be relaxing and fulfilling leisure time, packing bottles of lotion are just an added headache. Additionally, wearing too many layers can often become cumbersome and uncomfortable. It would seem there were few alternatives in guarding oneself against the sun’s harmful rays. That is, until now.
UVP, or UV protective outerwear, has grown in popularity among avid explorers of the outdoors. Our UV protective fishing shirts are, in many ways, more effective than SPF. UV-blocking textiles have been designed to be breathable, water-wicked, and come in a variety of styles to suit your particular needs and weather conditions. The difference is in the way the material is weaved together, making its resistance to UV radiation most effective.
While lotions and other topical treatments are measured by SPF, these textiles are measured by UPF, and there’s a distinct difference between the two. SPF, or sun protection factor, measures the degree of protection from the sun’s UVB rays. UV protective clothing, on the other hand, can protect from both UVB and UVA rays, which is measured by UPF (UV protection factor).
Sun protection is a major concern for anglers. Skin cancer is particularly worrisome as the time spent in the sun is only amplified by its reflection off the water. Thankfully, there is a better solution.
According to medical professionals, UVP clothing with UVF of 50+ has the greatest efficacy in resisting both UVA and UVB rays. Much like SPF 50 will protect skin from 98% of UVB rays, a UVF of 50+ will protect from 98% of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.
Rather than grapple with the constant reapplication of sunscreen and wearing bulky clothing that is less than conducive to your time on the water, it provides a comfortable solution which will ultimately allow you to be healthier and safer while you’re out in the open air. Combining your usual regiment of sunscreen with UVP apparel makes for optimal comfort and safety.
Bones Outfitters specialize in providing the best performance fishing gear. Our outdoor apparel is no exception, and that’s why we offer shirts that are UVF 55+. Outdoorsmen (and women) want to be in nature, not limited by potential sunburns. UVP outerwear is the ideal solution for anglers of all skill levels, so you can get out there and enjoy your sport-- without the fuss.
